I love Joe Sacco

I read 'A Safe Area: Gorazde' by Sacco, this year, and although it is a sad and true war story set in the mid '90's Bosnia, it is a fascinating book. He writes in comic/graphic novel/sequetial art form, which is a contrast to the subject matter. Sacco is a journalist with wonderful artistic skill. His drawings tell the story along with the text making for a great insight into the people's lives. He lived in the war torn town for about 4 monthes and was in danger often. Sacco puts a lot of his personality into his work; he inserts his own image in many of the drawings and is quite self-effacing. The form really helps show the human element of the war. 'Gorazde' is non-fiction and history, which I enjoy, so I would reccomend it to any YA (young adult) and adult reader.

The Alchemyst, Michael Scott

I read this book since it is a Tupper library item and many students have withdrawn it. I liked the cover, kind of Euro old school, fantasy and what not. It was very fun, exciting, quite a good adventure, suitable for ages 10+. The concepts are simple, you know, the regular good V. evil, and guess who is winning; it is the first in a trilogy. Scott is Irish, and supposedly an expert of mythology. He incorporates many of the myths that many of us have grown up with if from a Euro lineage. There is even the Witch of Endor.
